A VIEW FROM THE TERRACE
Fife & Lothians Cup. Quarter final
Bo’ness United v Linlithgow Rose
BU starting 11. Gk : Murphy. Defence : Gemmell, Donnelly, Gibb, Hunter & Ruari MacLennan. Strickland, Philp Sloan, Keast & Wright.
Subs : Smith, Scullion, Tierney, Simpson & Ritchie.
The first chance of the game fell to the home side with good play on the left but the visiting keeper alert and watched the ball go past his post. As the half went on the visitors came more into it and their prolific goal scorer over the years Tommy Coyne missed what you could say were sitters.
The BU at times didn’t look too clever at the back but at other times looked exceptional and keeper Andy Murphy was on top form saving the day. The home side did have the ball in the net however it was judged to be offside. Towards the end of the half the visitors again had the better of it but no goals to show as chances went begging.
Half time Bo’ness 0 – 0 Linlithgow
Into the second half and immediately there was a very legitimate claim for a penalty as the Rose keeper looked to be ushering the ball out of play but changed his mind and in doing so pulled down the advancing Marty Wright. The ref to the fury of the crowd waved away the appeals. The opening goal then came however when Ross Philp was on hand to put the ball home for 1-0 BU.
The home side were looking positive after scoring but got a scare when the Rose Number 9 had a shot come back off the post. The first sub for BU came when Colin Strickland was replaced by Callum Smith.
The next chance for BU came the way Wright who ran into a through ball and placed the ball brilliantly into the corner of the net only to look up and see the linesman’s flag up for offside. Next chance fell for the visitors and a brilliant save from Murphy in the BU goal kept the score to 1-0. The BU then got a free kick well outside the box but with rain now falling heavily Robert Sloan fancied his chances on the wet surface with soaking ball and his shot go narrowly wide. Next chance fell for the home side as well when Smith had the ball at his feet nicely for a shot from outside the box that went just over the bar. A second sub for the BU followed and Wright went off for Jack Simpson. Sloan then swung in a brilliant free kick and Stuart Hunter was not picked up to head the ball home into the Rose net for 2-0.
With little more action other than a final sub for the BU when Connor Scullion replaced Fraser Keast, the BU saw it out and are awarded with a semi final tie against Broxburn.
Full time Bo’ness 2 – 0 Linlithgow.
