Alex Jack Cup 3rd Round
Bo’ness headed to Tranent in the quarter final of the Alex Jack Cup. This gives you entry to the William Hill Scottish Cup which will be like the Junior Cup to us.
Having tasted a defeat last week how would the BU bounce back and at times in the first half it looked like they were in shock or like rabbits in headlight lasting almost half an hour.
The BU defence were made work during this period and you could see why the they had a good defensive record so far this season.
The visiting team were still being encouraged by the following support they have although most of the match was in the BU half or box.
Josh Watt had a great chance with a free kick only to see it sting the bar.
.It was once again the turn of Tranent to govern the game and from a set piece for the BU a quick break almost found the net as the visitors were scrambling to get back but Andy Murphy in the BU had already earned his corn for this half.
Tranent 0 – 0 BU.
In the opening minutes of the second period the BU’s defence was breached and Murphy had no chance in the United goal and this gave the home side a deserved one goal lead.
Bo’ness were controlling the midfield and getting forward but nothing really to threaten the home goal. But with half an hour to go the equaliser came as the corner was met sweetly by Chris Donnelly to give the BU the lifeline and some belief back in them.
The support from Bo’ness were now right behind the team as they grew in confidence and a couple of half chances appeared. The Bu were now throwing everything except the kitchen sink at the home goal, but they managed to clear up field and reminding Murphy they could still be a dangerous force.
Sweeney who hadn’t been on that long had a great chance but it was more an effort trying to find someone as shooting at goal. United were wanting this finished and no extra time as they came forward wave after wave with a couple of chances.
The referee was looking at his watch which was almost up and the BU with a very dangerous free kick which was plucked out by the Tranent keeper (sorry as I couldn’t pronounce his name) and as he quickly fed his midfield they were off and running and Bo’ness never learned from the breakaway in the first half found Murphy with a good save but the follow up was in the back of the net giving Tranent a 2-1 lead.
From the kick off now in added time the BU were level after Brian Morgan had a shot/cross deflected into the home net for 2-2. This time the ref must have been ready for extra time.
Tranent kicked off and they headed forward before losing out and the place was in an uproar as Donnelly netted his second and it was like karma at Hurlford in the Scottish.
The BU now look forward to the semi final against either Hill of Beath or Haddington who saw off Edinburgh United today.
Things were getting slightly heated at full time and Stuart Hunter collected a second yellow and was going off twice as they would say, it looked as if he said something to the ref but it will come out later
The main thing just now is the BU are still in the cup and should be happy at that and as the captain says, “It’s just another day at the office”
