Football Nations Qualifying Cup 2nd Round
INVERKEITHING HILLFIELD SWIFTS 1 BO’NESS UNITED 2
BO’NESS were heavily odds on favourites for this tie but the professional attitudes were enough to see this through
Once the sides settled down with no goals to show the visitors started to take control and get closer to the home goal. The Swifts were doing well to keep the BU at arm’s length with a couple of half-chances but nothing to write home about.
It all changed midway through the first period when a free-kick was well taking from Brian Morgan and just what the BU needed.
Inverkeithing 0 Bo’ness 1
The Swifts tried to respond from the kick-off when a team can be vulnerable just after scoring but nothing was happening around the BU goal. It wasn’t long though until the visitors doubled the lead when a defensive blunder left Mark Mooney with probably the easiest of goals he will score this season.
Inverkeithing 0 Bo’ness 2
Like for like as the Swifts again went on the attack but nothing really happening of danger in front of the BU goal until a nice move opened up the defence but the forward looked to have been caught out with the ball and a chance to get back in before the break was gone.
HT: Inverkeithing 0 Bo’ness 2
Inverkeithing opened the second half up and Bo’ness lacklustre thinking was allowing the home side some chances which on another day might have gone in and a wake-up call for Max Christie’s shuffled side for the day. The home side never gave up as the BU was allowing them to play the way forward and get chances. Then finally the breakthrough came around 65 minutes when another attack paid off and Inverkeithing was back in the match as they scored with an easy move similar to the chances they squandered earlier.
Inverkeithing 1 Bo’ness 2
With the amber warnings now showing Christie made a change when with Mooney coming off and midfield general Michael Gemmell being introduced to shore up the back end and was booked before he got really up to speed.
Grant had a chance to net his second.but was in 50/50 mindset before fluffing the attempt.
New BU keeper Ryan Anderson then must have seen the red mist as he came well out and not a hope of getting the ball and left the goal wide open and a great opportunity went begging again for the equaliser.
The match played itself out and a hard afternoon against the Conference league side.
FT: Inverkeithing 1 Bo’ness 2
This was not a classic affair but the main thing was a win and the next round. Next week it will be back to league action and the first of five home matches which will be a bonus after starting the season playing out of Camelon.
Craig Henderson off Mark McKenzie on
Mark Mooney off Michael Gemmell on.
