BU Starting 11
Marshall, Jacobs, Campbell & Snowdon. Gillespie, Gemmell, Scott & Shirra. Batchelor.. Wilson & Miller.
Into the game and surprisingly to the away support it was the home side two divisions below that started the better team looking hungry for the ball and playing forward towards the visitors goal. The visitors tried to stem the attacks with some possession of the ball but none of the possession seemed to come to anything in the form of an attack.
Any time the BU did get forward the best they achieved was a corner which inevitably came to nothing.
Disbelief filled the away support as the home side produced a good move and the ball found the net for 1-0 West Calder. It wasn’t long before it became worse and some say embarrassing as a chip over the visiting keeper Andy Marshall made it 2-0 West Calder.
Nothing else from either side before half time made it Half time West Calder 2 – 0 BU. And given the 1st half performance the visitors deserved to be behind.
Into the second half and a change for the visitors saw Fraser Keast come on for Ryan Batchelor. The game however was much the same as before with the visitors having the ball but not looking dangerous and the home side still looking slightly better.
A bit of hope for the visitors came when Keast finished off a decent move to make it 2-1 The home side were still looking to get forward but with no danger created and the next chance fell to the visitors and they almost leveled with Keast on the end of a good move and a decent effort on goal was produced. Again the BU broke forward looking the stronger better team in the second half but a chance to shoot was spurned when a pass was played rather than a shot on goal. The visitors were now piling on the pressure and a foul for the home side saw the keeper come out the area only to give the ball away.
A very good and speculative chip almost had the visitors level but the ball went narrowly wide of the post. The BU were pushing forward again and another good shot this time saw the home keeper called into action to keep the ball out.
The home side appeared to be getting deeper and deeper encouraging the BU to continue pushing forward. The equaliser eventually came as the visitors won a free kick which was well delivered into the box and Ross Campbell was there on the end of it. It has to be said the equaliser was deserved after the BU looked embarrassing in the first half we controlled the second half and dominated proceedings. The winner then looked inevitable for the visitors as Keast broke through only to see his shot go narrowly wide. This was closely followed by a half chance but the flag went up for off side as the home keeper saved the shot anyway.
A final blow for the visitors saw Michael Gemmell get a red card as he lunged into a challenge. No further action saw the tie go to penalties. In a true game of two halves with a dismal first half followed by a good second period.
Full time West Calder 2 – 2 BU
This meant the cup tie was decided on penalties and the visiting BU went into the next round 4-2.
The penalty shoot out went with Keast Scoring for the BU followed by Scott Sally missing. The shoot out was then won with Gillespie, Will Snowdon & Andy Shirra converting spot kicks. Overall into the next round for the BU with a dismal 1st half and will have to improve to go any further in this tournament..
