Bo’ness
United ‘s run in this
season’s Citylink
Scottish Junior Cup came
to an end as they were
narrowly defeated by
local rivals Linlithgow
Rose. A single Gordon
Herd strike proved the
difference between the
teams though Linlithgow
finished the game with
only nine men, Brian Carrigan and Greg Logan
both red carded in the
second half.
Bo’ness
made the early running
with a Greg Denham
tackle thwarting David
Morrison and a Jon Tully
header from a Stephen
Payne corner. However in
9 minutes the Rose had a
direct shot at goal but
Brian Carrigan’s free
kick effort curled
just wide of the post.
The pace
of the game picked up
with play swinging back
and forward though in
quick succession Jon
Mitchell of Bo’ness and
Linlithgow’s Gordon Herd
both missed out with
wayward crosses from the
wings. The BU's did come
close to scoring in 38
minutes as Stephen Payne
sent in a good free kick
cross but Linlithgow
keeper Greg Logan did
well to block Scott
Mauchline’s header on
goal.
It looked
like the half would
finish all square but
just before the whistle
Linlithgow scored when
Iain Gallacher played a
ball into the feet of
Gordon Herd who
turned beautifully on
the six yard line before
hitting a low shot into
the bottom corner of
net.
Two
minutes into the second
half Greg Logan made a
good save from Scott
Brown and at the other
end Carrigan hit a free
kick shot into the
Bo’ness wall. The nature
of the game changed in
55 minutes when the Rose
were reduced to ten men
after Brian Carrigan
clashed with Will
Snowdon just inside the
Bo’ness half and the
Linlithgow man was sent
off
Five
minutes later Bo’ness
looked to have taken
advantage of the extra
man as Stephen Payne
sent in a good free kick
cross but Greg Logan got
across to make a
fantastic save palming
Scott Mauchline’s header
round the post. Logan
was again in action this
time getting down to cut
out a low cross from
Kevin Donnelly but in 67
minutes the keeper was
the second Rose player
to be sent off after he
brought down Scott Brown
stopping his run on
goal.
Play was
held up as Steven
Pinkowski pulled on his
gloves to take his place
in the Linlithgow goal
but the Bo’ness free
kick from the edge of
the box was cleared for
a corner and from the
incoming cross Scott
Brown shot wide of the
goal.
Scott
Mauchline saw his shot
deflected past the
Linlithgow post and
Pinkowski blocked an
effort from Jon
Mitchell. With a two man
advantage Bo’ness had
most of the ball but
they couldn’t make the
breakthrough and
Linlithgow looked
unruffled as they dealt
with anything the BUs
had to offer.
Two minutes into time
added on David Morrison
headed over the
Linlithgow bar but just
before the end the Rose
might have scored again
as they broke forward.
Ian MacSween played in
Keith Hogg but his shot
slipped past the post
though it mattered
little with the final
whistle signaling
Bo’ness’s exit from the
national tournament.
