Well, apparently the people demanded it - for reasons unknown - and wee Charlie's only gone and delivered. He's asked me to give folk in the East a summary of what's been happening out here in the West, to save you all from checking yourselves online! And because I'm not limited to one or two pages in a proggie, I feel compelled to be as detailed as I want to be (or can be bothered to be) - so prepare yourselves, and spare 10 minutes to catch up on the latest matches in the West.
In the Super League Premier Division, there were two Ayrshire battles on Saturday, first of which was Irvine Meadow hosting Kilbirnie Ladeside. It was Ladeside who took the lead from the penalty spot, Montgomery converting to give the visitors the lead but Meadow equalised before half time and then got the winner minutes from time, David McGeown netting from close range. In the other Ayrshire derby Beith hosted Cumnock, and it was the current Super League Premier Division champions Beith who won 1-0 thanks to Kenny McLean's headed effort in the first half. In arguably the day's biggest match, Arthurlie won 2-1 at home to Auchinleck Talbot thanks to a double from Denis McLaughlin with a strike from Talbot's Smith in between - insert your own 'Denis the Menace' joke here. Rob Roy travelled to Rutherglen Glencairn at the start of the day on top of the table, and on top of the world, but Glencairn brought them crashing back down to Earth ten minutes in when Stephen Anderson's header opened the scoring for the hosts. It looked like 'One of those days' when Rob Roy's Thomas Sinclair missed a penalty with ten minutes to go, being denied by a great save from Allan Colquhoun. But a few minutes later Sinclair got his revenge when he curled a free-kick past Colquhoun and into the bottom corner to salvage a draw. The two other matches were emphatic victories for Largs and Pollok - firstly the Seasiders Largs, who destroyed Petershill at their own ground 5-1. After a minute Alan Muir had Largs ahead, and then after 20 minutes an Andy Monaghan penalty doubled their advantage. Captain Eddie Walton made it 3-0 right on half time, and Monaghan got his second and Largs' fourth after the hour. Former Clydebank captain Gordon Lappin rounded off the scoring for Largs, and Petershill grabbed an undeserved consolation from the penalty spot in injury time with Kevin McBride scoring. Finally, in the middle of nowhere known as Moor Park, Lanark, the home side hosted Pollok, and the 'Lok ran out comfortable winners eventually. Calum Hardie scored the opener for Pollok but the Yowes (yes, Lanark's nickname basically means 'sheep') equalised from the penalty spot. Roddy Hunter put the Lok back in front before half time, and Hunter scored yet again to make it 3-1 after the hour mark. Ian Diack made it 4-1 with five minutes to go, not only securing victory but securing top spot in the table thanks to goal difference, ahead of bitter rivals Arthurlie and the two Ayrshire sides of Irvine Meadow and Beith. At the other end of the table, Petershill are in a whole heap of trouble - no points, 12 goals conceded in 3 games.
In the Super League First Division, Ashfield still sit top of the table after an emphatic 5-1 victory at home to struggling Annbank. A Mark Thomson hat-trick inspired Ashfield to put in the five-star performance to go joint-top with Hurlford, enjoying a 100% league success rate also, beating Kilwinning 3-1. Renfrew won 3-2 at home to Girvan, Matt McLean scoring a hat-trick to get the points for Renfrew despite strikes from Scott McGilp and Neal Gilmour for Girvan. Whitletts enjoyed a 3-1 victory at home to Vale of Clyde, while East Kilbride only managed a draw against Shotts Bon Accord, Paul McLaughlin's strike for Shotts being cancelled out by a penalty from EK's McGhee. Most exciting match in the division was when Cumbernauld hosted Bellshill, and despite Cumbernauld taking the lead they gave away two penalties, both of which were scored, before a free-kick made it 3-1 to Bellshill at half time. The second half saw Bellshill add a fourth goal, before Cumbernauld scored twice themselves to set up an exciting finale which produced no equaliser. There's someone I'm forgetting here - who is it - oh aye, my own team! Clydebank won 1-0 at home to Glenafton thanks to a curling free-kick from Paul Allum. A match in which the home side deserved a win but for a long time seemed like it was going to be one of those days when nothing would go our way. Check out the highlights on YouTube if you want, see for yourself. The league table shows Ashfield and Hurlford top with a 100% record, Kilwinning in third with Renfrew behind them on goal difference, Whitletts 5th still unbeaten and then it's a mixture of sides with an inconsistant start to the season. Consistantly poor so far are Annbank - conceding 13 in 3 games - and Vale of Clyde, both without a single point yet, while Shotts and East Kilbride have yet to register a single league victory.
In the Ayrshire District League, there were some gubbings galore. In the division's match of the day Ardrossan beat Irvine Victoria 3-0, with goals coming from Graham Muir, Graeme Hamilton and Scott Adam. This puts them emphatically top of the league alongside Maybole, who beat Dalry 3-0. Darvel thumped Lugar Boswell 5-0, but Saltcoats went one better and destroyed Ardeer 6-0. Kello beat Muirkirk 3-1, and Craigmark bounced back from their 7-1 mauling the previous weekend to beat Troon 4-2. Irvine Vics, after a good Sectional League Cup campaign, will be disappointed so far not to be further up the table, while Ardeer will be wondering just how long this season will last after yet another heavy defeat.
Life in the Central District First Division is usually pretty hectic and it's no different this season. Port Glasgow are the only side to maintain a 100% record as their 2-1 win away to Johnstone Burgh puts them top. Blantyre and Glasgow Perthshire boringly drew 0-0, while Chris Faulds, Steven Mullen and Keiran Bradshaw were on target to help Thorniewood win 3-1 against Kilsyth. Neilston won away to Greenock Juniors 3-1, while St Anthony's thought they'd rescued a draw at home to Dunipace when after going a goal behind equalised through Abou Mansare, cancelling out Marty Wright's first-half strike with 5 minutes to go. But Keiron McIllduff scored a last-minute winner to give victory to Dunipace, and the 'Pace are proving themselves to be a team capable of last-minute winners as they also did it against Shettleston a couple of weeks previously. The day's most exciting match in this league was between Cambuslang Rangers and Vale of Leven, and this seven-goal thriller got off to an exciting start when Fraser Craig headed Cambuslang in front, but Vale equalised through a Kenny Wilson header and at half time, nobody would expect the drama about to unfold. With six bookings in the first half, though, referee Craig Napier showed he was card-happy and this trend continued throughout the second half. Ryan Russell put Vale of Leven ahead but Brian Welsh equalised with 20 minutes remaining. Welsh would go from hero to villain, however, when he conceded a penalty kick, and was shown a red card too. James Crowhurst scored from the spot, then Mark Bishop was sent off for Cambuslang putting them down to 9 men. Another penalty kick was awarded to the Vale and Crowhurst again scored from the spot, and despite Brian McPhee's consolation it was in vain, and further punishment for the Lang was in store when Fraser Craig was also sent off late on. Seven goals, 17 cards (13 of which were for Cambuslang), 2 penalty kicks and both managers also sent off - don't you just love Junior football? So while Port sit top with a 100% record, Vale of Leven are second while much-fancied Cambuslang are still without a point, rooted to the bottom of the table.
In the Central District Second Division Yoker sit top, after thumping Benburb 6-2. Alistair Murray scored an early penalty for Yoker before Murray again made it two. Jamie Carson made it 3-0 when he scored from a penalty rebound, and Benburb made things interesting when Stevie Waddell scored twice, the second from the penalty spot. But Neil Schoneville made it 4-2 after half an hour, and in the second half Mark McManus and Murray scored to complete an emphatic win. Carluke travelled to Wishaw and were 2-0 up at half time with strikes from Arnott and Weir, but Wishaw made it 2-2 in the second half. Carluke's Pollock grabbed a late winner though to break Wishaw hearts and keep themselves in contention with top spot. Lesmahagow thrashed Newmains 7-1, while Larkhall won 4-0 at home to Forth. St Roch's, who were top before the weekend's matches were played, lost 4-3 at home to Stonehouse Violet. Maryhill's abysmal form continues as they lost 2-0 at home to joint-top Royal Albert.
Next weekend sees some cracking fixtures in store. Pollok host Beith and Largs face Irvine Meadow in the top flight's most tantalising games, while in the Super First Glenafton take on Renfrew, while Girvan take on Renfrew and most interesting of all is Hurlford and Ashfield clashing, the two top sides in the division so far meeting this early on in the season. Hard to really tell what big matches are on in the Ayrshire District league - let's just say all of them so nobody gets annoyed - while in the Central First, Port Glasgow host St Anthony's and Johnstone Burgh are home to Neilston. Finally in the Central District Second Division, Yoker are home to Lesmahagow - the two teams who scored 13 goals between them last weekend, you can almost guarantee there'll be goals galore in that match too.
