Bo’ness United bowed out of the William Hill Scottish Cup, losing at home to Cowdenbeath, although the result did not tell the whole story of the game.

New signing Ryan Scanlon made his debut but it was short lived when he was sent off after only 22 minutes. Already booked, he put in a tackle with his studs showing, and the referee issued a straight red card.

It was going to be tough for Bo’ness who had competed well up to that point and they went behind in 38 minutes. Jon Robertson got across the front of the Bo’ness defence to head home Scott Linton’s ball from the left.

Bo’ness had to do a bit of defending to keep Cowdenbeath out but just before the break Stephen Tarditi got up to head down a Will Snowdon free kick from deep. Cowdenbeath keeper Thomas Flynn had to look lively to smother the ball with Nicky Walker closing in.

At the start of the second half a good move saw BU substitute John Stewart lay the ball back for Jay Shields who was crowded out at the edge of the Cowdenbeath box.  Shortly after a Lee Duffy free kick cross was headed clear and Bo’ness were looking sharper. However Cowdenbeath went back on the attack but the BU defence were doing a good job keeping them at bay.

In 63 minutes a Lee Duffy free kick into the Cowdenbeath box was headed back by Scott Gibb but Stuart Hunter’s shot went over. Three minutes later Bo’ness went further behind. Lewis Coult sent over a cross from the right and Scott Linton was unmarked when he headed low past Scott Christie from twelve yards.

Bo’ness kept going and almost scored when Stuart Hunter beat the Cowdenbeath keeper in the air and Nicky Walker connected with a shot only to see his goal bound effort headed clear for a corner.

There was real controversy in 82 minutes when Joe Mbu was beaten by Nicky Walker and he looked to have fouled the Bo’ness player in the box, but the referee waved play on. The injustice that Bo’ness felt was compounded three minutes later when Lewis Coult looked to have pulled Will Snowdon back in a tussle for the ball but the Cowdenbeath player went down in the box and it was the Bo’ness player who was penalised. Lewis Coult got up to convert and Stuart Hunter was subsequently red carded as he showed his frustration with the official.

Bo’ness United can now concentrate on the Junior competitions starting with next week’s Scottish Junior Cup tie against Saltcoats Victoria
