Bo’ness United experienced a second defeat in as many weeks but, although the result was disappointing, the performance was much improved from last weekend.
Enjoying most of the play the BUs created some chances but the home side also created, and more importantly converted twice to take the points. In the first half a good Bo’ness move saw Ian Nimmo shoot narrowly wide and a Chris Donnelly header was saved by Hill of Beath keeper Stuart Hall. Just before the break the best chance saw Stephen Tarditi in, but his shot from inside the box went high and wide. It was not all one way and the BU defence were kept busy. A good Scott Christie saved deflected a Daniel Kelly effort passed the post.
In the second half Bo’ness again enjoyed a lot of possession but couldn’t find their way to goal. Hill of Beath’s Kelly was fortunate to stay on the park after a bad challenge in midfield but the referee decided a yellow card was sufficient.
As the game progressed the first goal was going to be important, and with nineteen minutes remaining it was Hill of Beath who made the breakthrough. As the ball came forward the flag went up against Stephen Bathgate but, with the BU defence hesitating, Craig Smart, who was not offside, nipped through to shoot low past Scott Christie.
In 82 minutes Hill of Beath sealed the points when Stephen Bathgate played a pass in the box and from an acute angle Craig Smart smashed a shot into the Bo’ness net.
The BUs were unlucky not to get something from the game as a Kevin Watt effort went narrowly past and the same player couldn’t believe it as his header from a Graeme McLaren cross hit the Hill of Beath post.
These two defeats are a setback for Bo’ness United hopes for three Super League Championships in a row but the attention will now focus on the big match next week as Cowdenbeath visit Newtown Park in the William Hill Scottish Cup.
