Bo’ness United won a famous victory to send local rivals Linlithgow Rose out of the Scottish Junior Cup. It will be Bo’ness’s name that will go into the pot for the second round to be drawn on Sunday. The BUs just about deserved their victory in what was a tight, competitive game, although many will feel that Linlithgow merited the chance of a replay.
After a quiet start to the game the BUs went close in 12 minutes when John Stewart deflected a Stewart Devine free kick shot onto the Linlithgow bar. Almost right away Andy Shirra got onto the end of a Phil Hagan low cross but BU Keeper Scott Christie made a great save to palm away the incoming volley.
In 34 minutes Gordon Herd got in a snap shot from the edge of the Bo’ness box but Christie saved and two minutes later it was the BUs who got themselves in front. Ian Nimmo gathered a ball out of defence by Will Snowdon, and his pass found Nicky Walker running down the right. The low ball came over and John Stewart was quick as he flashed a shot into the net at the near post.
That goal was good enough to see Bo’ness to the break and just after the whistle Bo’ness might have extended their lead. Ian Nimmo gathered a returned pass from John Stewart and his low angled shot just went wide at the far post.
Linlithgow responded and BU keeper Scott Christie made a fabulous save to turn a Mark Tyrrell free kick shot round his post. A close thing for Linlithgow but in 57 minutes they did get a goal as Tommy Coyne got onto the end of an inswinging Mark Tyrrell free kick cross to nod his side back into the game.
Linlithgow looked dangerous for a while, putting Bo’ness on the back foot but the BU worked themselves back into the game. With twenty minutes remaining Bo’ness got what proved to be the winner when Stewart Devine hit a free kick shot from twenty five yards. The ball took a wicked deflection off the Rose wall, and with Rose keeper David Hay going one way it flashed into the opposite corner of the net.
With eight minutes remaining Linlithgow might have got back in it but Stuart McArthur’s shot from a Tommy Coyne lay back went wide. Only twelve yards out it looked a good chance for the Rose to take the game back to Prestonfield.
In the last few minutes Bo’ness had to do a bit of defending but they were strong and composed, and it was a display of both character and tenacity that won the day for Bo’ness United.Goal
