Bo’ness United experienced an early exit from the East of Scotland Cup as they were beaten at Haddington Athletic.

Haddington proved to be more than a match for the BUs, and Bo’ness can have little to complain about. In the first half there were no goals but both sides created chances in an open match. The closest Haddington came was a Jackie Myles shot that hit the bar and at the other end a Stephen Tarditi shot hit the Haddington post.

At the start of the second half, Bo’ness looked determined but in 60 minutes it was the home side that made the breakthrough. Yusif Bernawi looked well offside when he gathered a long pass out of defence, but there was no whistle, and he ran on before rounding Scott Christie to put the ball into the empty net.

Five minutes later Bo’ness had a great chance to equalise after Lee Duffy was tripped in the Haddington box but John Stewart slammed the penalty kick against the post.

Haddington were reduced to ten men in 71 minutes when Frazer Paterson was shown a straight red card for scything down Nicky Walker as he ran towards goal. Only four minutes later, Bo’ness took advantage as Haddington keeper Ross Combe could only parry a Nicky Walker cross and John Stewart bundled over on the line.

It was perhaps expected that Bo’ness would now go onto win the game but Haddington had other ideas, and with ten minutes remaining it was the team from the East Region South League who scored the winner. The Bo’ness defence were wide open and Sean Jamieson released Derek Slight who cut in from the left, and the Haddington substitute slid a shot under the advancing Scott Christie.

Bo’ness tried to get back but despite various efforts on goal they couldn’t get the strike that would take the tie into penalties.
